Как и все порядочные истории, началась эта история давно. В конце ХІХ века жил и работал русский скрипичный мастер. Вероятно, мастером он был неплохим, во всяком случае, он был состоятельным человеком и мог позволить себе получать удовольствие от своей работы. Он и получил, решив однажды, ни много ни мало, во-первых: скупить все дерево, оставшееся от самого великого Антонио Страдивари, а во-вторых, сжечь все, что успел сам создать до этого… Н-да... Были эти столь зверски убитые инструменты действительно плохи или только казались таковыми не в меру
требовательному мастеру — вопрос чисто академический. Но точно известно, что из дерева Страдивари сделал тринадцать скрипок, и одна из них — самая лучшая — прижилась в Одессе.
Скрипки сами ищут себе хозяев. Скрипка должна знать, что ее любят…
Прошло много лет. Она жила у старого одессита, мастера-коллекционера, отдыхала от пережитых войн и спала. Ее не продавали, ее не отдавали, только иногда, очень редко, давали в руки Большим Музыкантам, тогда она старалась спеть как можно ярче и яснее. Ее хвалили, а после укладывали в футляр, где она снова засыпала, вспоминая во сне всех своих Музыкантов. На ней играли Федотов и Климов, Ойстрах и Пикайзен, и ей никогда не было стыдно за свой звук, но руки, которые ее держали, были чужими. Умелыми, грамотными, знающими, но… чужими. Однажды… весьма сказочно звучит, правда?
Так вот, однажды она увидела Его. Ему было 10 лет, и он учился играть на скрипке. Его пальцы были еще слабыми и неумелыми, вопросы детскими, а чувства простыми, но было в Нем что-то такое… Он рассматривал и расслушивал инструменты старого коллекционера, а тот и рад был оживить скрипичную историю — лишь бы загорались любопытные детские глаза. Он хотел своими руками ощупать и обыграть каждую скрипку, которую видел, но ЭТУ скрипку ему не давали. Ее надо было заслужить, ее надо было оправдать, ей нужно было соответствовать. А ему было только десять лет! Его чувства были… Их вообще еще не было, но пальцы, пальцы!.. Мальчишка стал учиться. Он обещал себе, что когда-нибудь он будет играть на ЭТОЙ скрипке всегда!

Дальше было разное. Время утекало сквозь оконные щели. Мальчику пришлось уехать учиться в другие города, пришлось и возвращаться оттуда на каникулах. И всякий раз он заходил к старому мастеру, чтоб увидеться с Ней. Но «всему свой срок отмерян на земле» — только спустя годы мастер счел его музыкантом и позволил прикоснуться к мечте. Ему исполнилось тогда семнадцать лет.
Думаете, это всё? Да что вы! Самое интересное только начинается! Они полюбили друг друга с первого звука и готовы были пронести это через всю жизнь. Все имеет цену в подлунном мире, но оказалось, что скрипка НЕ ПРОДАЕТСЯ!
Может ли человек хранить верность скрипке? А женщине? Можно понять тех, кто скажет, что глупо 
хранить верность куску пусть даже очень хорошо выпиленного дерева, но можно их и пожалеть… Он играл на разных скрипках. Были в его руках творения и Страдивари, и Гварнери, и Амати — мужчина может увлечься красивыми женщинами. Но любить будет по-прежнему ту единственную, необходимую, как дыхание. Он ждал ЭТУ скрипку, как ждут любимую, как ждут судьбу — нетерпеливо и обреченно.
Все когда-нибудь кончается. Мастер умер, и его наследник решил обратить коллекцию в менее духовные, зато более удобные к применению деньги. Скрипки были выставлены на продажу. А ЭТА скрипка отправилась в залог — она должна была обеспечить покойного хозяина достойным памятником на кладбище. Согласитесь, весьма ответственная миссия! Ее даже собирались выкупить после продажи остальных, но что-то не сложилось, и осталась она этаким эквивалентом памяти в руках нового хозяина. Тот, в свою очередь, ее продал в третьи руки — кому нужно старое дерево! — из третьих она перешла в четвертые, потом… Потом она была выставлена на аукцион в Киеве, и неизвестно, как и куда ушла бы дальше, если бы не первая любовь! Главные герои всегда спасают своих принцесс, и не только в сказках, иначе какие они, к дьяволу, герои?! Он шел по ее следам, шаг за шагом, продавец за продавцом, покупатель за покупателем, ошарашивая и обезоруживая каждого словами: «Это МОЯ скрипка!» Он нашел ее — бедный музыкант в меркантильном мире…
Все имеет цену в подлунном мире, а ее цена определялась уже в условной валюте с достаточно длинной цепочкой нулей. Достаточно длинной для того, чтобы показаться нереальной.
